The Jefferson of Washington D.C. debuted in the nation's capital in 1923 under the stewardship of Edward Bennett Williams, a devoted admirer of Thomas Jefferson. It later became a hotel in 1955. Guests find themselves just four blocks from the White House. The hotel's impressive architecture and interior design make a well-appointed blend of sophistication and warmth. The hotel is also home to a collection of American arts, including original documents signed by Thomas Jefferson himself.
The Lounge, where they serve afternoon tea, is decorated with original caricature prints from the 1700s. Being seated in your own cubicle provides much privacy. One thing I learned here was to stay off your cell phone before you order. Out of respect to their customers, they will not approach you until you are finished with your conversation. Finally, the polite server took my order. The staff's constant smile helped me forget I was alone. Minutes later, the tea arrived in a silver pot. This was then followed by the tea sandwiches and the sweets on a silver-tiered display. Everything was pretty normal until the powdered sugar-topped scones arrived at my table. I picked one of the two large scones, only to realize how extremely hot they were. Never in my years of having afternoon tea did I try such scones... they were so delicious, too! I would have to say that these were definitely the best by far in the world. You could come here regularly just for scones and tea. That is how good they really are. I would definitely come back for these scones.
