Declared as a landmark in 1908, the St. Regis proudly takes its rightful place among the great
hotels of the world. The beautiful beaux-arts structure, located in Midtown Manhattan, is known
to be the epitome of luxury and hospitality. Inside, Italian- marbled works of art can be found in
all directions.
As the focal point of the hotel, the Astor Court can be found just inside the front door of the St.
Regis. It provides an elegant atmosphere for afternoon tea accompanied by a harpist. The table
setting consists of white linen from Porthault and Limoges porcelain, exclusively designed for the
hotel by way of Tiffany and Company.
Champagne and wine are available, but I prefer to stick with the popular selection of tea served
in a silver teapot instead. The six varieties of dainty sliced tea sandwiches were overwhelming. I
tasted and savored the chicken curry, egg salad, cucumber, smoke salmon, rock shrimp, and
goat cheese with pimiento. I always remind myself to always begin with the scones, while they
are still warm. However, the sight of these delectable tea sandwiches made me forget to do so.
The oven-fresh scones were still moist and delicious, served with double Devonshire cream and
several choices of seasonal jams. The real stoppers were the petite fours from Pastry Chef
Laurent Merdy. They were too pretty and irresistible for me to pause any longer. I started with
the lemon strawberry mousse custard, which not only looked good, but tasted delicious. The
Napoleon, fruit tartlet, opera cake, chocolate almond mousse, and raspberry lemon biscuit will
satisfy any dessert gourmands.
While enjoying this afternoon luxury, I took pleasure in my surroundings, like the frothy sky
ceiling, which is encircled by a mythological mural painted by Zhou Shu Liang, depicting the
Greek ideals of peace, harmony, and beauty. In the center, a white statue banked by fresh floral
arrangement lies just under the crytal chandelier.
The discreet, yet ever present service from the staff was fully appreciated. Tea at the St. Regis
certainly lives up to its maintained prestigious reputation. They attract connoisseurs of luxury
and patrons alike, who desire to have a rich experience - like having afternoon in the Astor
Court of the St. Regis.
